Affordable hotels in Djibouti: the 3★ against their rating

What does a 2★ or 3★ listing mean in Djibouti?

As with the higher categories, the star is a mention declared by the establishment and displayed on its Google listing. It states the standard the hotel claims for itself, not what an independent inspection found. We report it as it stands, without turning it into a recommendation.

In Djibouti, the lowest category of the September 2026 survey contains only hotels listed as 3-star: no establishment listed as 2-star appears in it. That does not mean very simple accommodation does not exist in the country — the old town has some — but that none of those establishments carries a 2-star listing in our sources. The budget end of the market therefore turns on something other than the star: on guest ratings, and on rates that are actually published.

Which are the 2★ and 3★ hotels in Djibouti?

Twelve of these thirteen establishments are in Djibouti City in the survey, the thirteenth being Gadileh Resort Hotel, in Tadjourah. The National Tourism Agency directory gives the district for several of them: Ras Dika is on rue d’Éthiopie, Atlantic on rue de Rome, Alia on the Plateau du Serpent, COMFORT on place Mahmoud Harbi, Auberge Le Héron towards the Plateau du Marabout, Virginia on the airport road and Boulaos in the southern industrial zone. These indications come from the directory, not from Google.

Is the top of this list reliable?

Two groups have to be separated, and the review column does that on its own.

At the top of the table, two addresses rest on a solid volume of reviews: Gadileh Resort Hotel Tadjourah, 4.8/5 from 334 Google reviews (September 2026 survey), and Ras Dika Hotel, 4.8/5 from 269 Google reviews (September 2026 survey). At those volumes, the rating withstands individual impressions.

Two other establishments show the same 4.8/5 rating, but on a thin sample: COMFORT Hôtel, 4.8/5 from 19 Google reviews (September 2026 survey), and Arta Maison des Randonneurs, 4.8/5 from 18 Google reviews (September 2026 survey). Conversely, Royal D Plaza is rated 4.0/5 from 19 Google reviews (September 2026 survey). Across about twenty reviews, two very satisfied stays are enough to lift the average, and two poor stays are enough to sink it. These ratings indicate a tendency; they do not demonstrate one.

A ranked list that placed COMFORT Hôtel ahead of Ras Dika would therefore be misleading, even though it would be comparing two identical ratings. That is why we always publish the number of reviews next to the rating.

Why is a 3★ hotel rated higher than the 5★ one?

Because the star and the rating do not measure the same thing, and in Djibouti the gap is spectacular.

Sheraton Djibouti is listed as 5-star and rated 3.8/5 from 777 Google reviews (September 2026 survey). Ras Dika Hotel is listed as 3-star and rated 4.8/5 from 269 Google reviews (September 2026 survey). Gadileh Resort Hotel Tadjourah, also 3-star, stands at 4.8/5 from 334 Google reviews (September 2026 survey). Two hotels claiming a lower standard are therefore rated higher than the only 5-star property in the capital whose rating rests on several hundred reviews. Kempinski, the other 5-star in Djibouti City, is on the contrary rated 4.7/5 from 3,348 Google reviews (September 2026 survey): the listing is not the problem in itself. What varies is the gap between the standard claimed and the experience actually had.

This does not mean a 3-star equals a 5-star. The 5-star declares facilities and services the 3-star does not offer, and that difference is real for anyone who needs a meeting room, a car service or an on-site restaurant. It means the star says nothing about guest satisfaction, and the rating says something about it. A traveller looking for a clean, well-kept and well-located room is often better off reading the rating before the listing.

Which are the cheapest places to stay in the catalogue?

Our catalogue documents six establishments, and the lowest rates it publishes are not in the list of thirteen 3-star hotels above. None of those thirteen appears in it: no price is therefore published for them on this page.

Two remarks on that table. Golden Airport Hôtel is the only listed establishment (4-star) among the cheapest in the catalogue, and it also publishes a deluxe suite at 35,600 francs. Sinny Hill Center, which takes up five rows, carries no listing in the September 2026 survey: we therefore assign it none, and we also publish no phone number for it, for lack of a verifiable source.

At the other end, the catalogue publishes two villa buyouts at Loubatanleh, at 300,000 and 325,000 Djiboutian francs depending on group size, detailed on the apartments and villas page.

What should you check before booking a 3-star hotel in Djibouti?

Three points, all drawn from what our sources allow us to establish.

The contact details. Of the six establishments our catalogue documents, five carried a verifiable error in phone number or address. A wrong number is worse than a missing one: it sends the traveller to someone else. If you book by phone, have the address confirmed at the same time as availability.

The facilities. Our catalogue documents neither air conditioning, nor internet access, nor a pool, nor breakfast for these establishments, and we therefore assert nothing about them. At the budget end, these points are not incidental: have them specified, along with the final price, before you commit.

The number of reviews, again. A flattering rating backed by about twenty reviews does not protect you. If the establishment you are considering has few reviews, look for their date: a rating built three years ago describes a different hotel from today’s.
