Three budget levels for 5 days in Djibouti, rebuilt with the catalogue's published prices only. Backpacker level: 44,800 Djiboutian francs per person, sharing a bungalow four ways. Mid-range level: 93,500. High-end level: 236,492. These are our additions, not rates: each term is visible and verifiable, and meals do not appear in them.

Can three budget levels be costed with catalogue prices only?

Yes, on three conditions, and they explain the shape of this page.

First condition: each term is a published price, attached to the name of its offer. No amount on this page comes from anywhere else — neither from a competitor site, nor from a field estimate.

Second condition: the total is our addition. It is not a rate, nor a package, nor a price we would charge. You can redo each addition line by line, and that is the point of the exercise.

Third condition: unknown lines remain missing. The catalogue publishes no catering price, no drink, no taxi fare outside the official grid. We do not estimate them and we do not dilute them into a daily average. A budget that silently included invented meals would be more misleading than an incomplete budget announced as such.

Two pricing anomalies run through those levels, and we publish them rather than smoothing them: a three-day tour cheaper than a two-day tour, and the same two-day tour published at 15,130 Djiboutian francs in one version, 35,000 in another. They are detailed at the end of the page.

Which common programme serves as the basis for the three levels?

The three levels cover the same 5-day, 4-night frame — the city, Lake Assal, the islands, a beach day and Ras Korali. Only the way of buying those days changes: according to the level, the same day comes from a one-day excursion or from an organised tour, and the bed is not the same.

Day Content Type of part used
Day 1 Djibouti City, place du 27-Juin City, free or included in a tour
Day 2 Lake Assal and its basin One-day excursion or first day of a tour
Day 3 Moucha and Maskali islands, Gulf of Tadjourah One-day excursion, boat
Day 4 Beach day on the coast Beach day, decreasing rate according to the group
Day 5 Ras Korali or return to the city Full day or second day of a tour
Nights 4 nights in all Bungalow, hotel room or camp

This breakdown is an assembly, not a package: the same programme is detailed term by term on our page Djibouti in 5 days. The three levels below are three budget versions of it.

What does the backpacker level look like, term by term?

The principle: no organised tour, only days taken à la carte, and the cheapest accommodation in the catalogue.

Term Catalogue offer Amount
4 nights in a four-bed bungalow Bungalow 1 to 5, Sinny Hill Center (Arta) 7,800 Fdj the bungalow / night
One-day excursion to Lake Assal One-day excursion to Lake Assal 18,000 Fdj / pers.
Beach day Beach Day Les Sables Blancs, group rate 6 to 20 3,000 Fdj / pers.
Full-day excursion Full Day Excursion to the Moucha & Maskali Islands 8,000 Fdj / pers.
Beach day Day at Ras Korali Beach from Arta 8,000 Fdj / pers.

The bungalow is sold per night and for the bungalow, not per person: 4 nights represent 4 × 7,800 = 31,200 Djiboutian francs. From there, the budget per person depends entirely on sharing.

Bungalow shared four ways — 31,200 ÷ 4 = 7,800 Djiboutian francs for the four nights. The complete addition becomes: 7,800 + 18,000 + 3,000 + 8,000 + 8,000 = 44,800 Djiboutian francs per person for five days.

Bungalow taken alone — the addition becomes: 31,200 + 18,000 + 3,000 + 8,000 + 8,000 = 68,200 Djiboutian francs for one person.

The gap between the two is 23,400 Djiboutian francs, for the same programme and the same excursions. It is sharing, and not the choice of visits, that makes a small budget in Djibouti.

What does the mid-range level look like, term by term?

The principle: an organised tour for the land part, hotel-room accommodation for the rest. Comfort is paid for first on the bed.

Term Catalogue offer Amount
Two-day tour, city and Lake Assal Two-day tour: Ville de Djibouti and Lac Assal 35,000 Fdj / pers.
3 nights in a deluxe double room Deluxe Double Room, Sables Blancs 25,000 Fdj the room / night
Full day at the islands Full Day Excursion to the Moucha & Maskali Islands 8,000 Fdj / pers.
Full day at Ras Korali Full day at Ras Korali Beach from Djibouti 13,000 Fdj / pers.

The three nights in a deluxe double room represent 3 × 25,000 = 75,000 Djiboutian francs for the room, so 37,500 francs per person when the room is shared two ways. The complete addition becomes: 35,000 + 37,500 + 8,000 + 13,000 = 93,500 Djiboutian francs per person.

Two reservations about this level. The first concerns the tour’s night: two-day offers cover one night according to the formula, and the catalogue does not say whether it is systematically included. If it is not, a fourth night is needed, and the total rises. The second concerns the crossing to Les Sables Blancs: the only line in the catalogue mentioning it is the stay with boat transport, published from 22,000 to 32,000 Djiboutian francs. The deluxe room, for its part, does not mention it — to have clarified.

What does the high-end level look like, term by term?

The principle: a long tour takes the whole stay, and activities are added instead of replacing.

Term Catalogue offer Amount
Complete four-day tour Complete 4-day tour: Le Meilleur de Djibouti 120,000 Fdj / pers.
Whale shark outing Outing off Arta Plage, window from 15 October to 15 March ≈ 25,000 Fdj / pers.
Extra night in a suite Suite, Escale International Hôtel (Djibouti City) 91,492 Fdj the suite / night

The complete addition: 120,000 + 25,000 + 91,492 = 236,492 Djiboutian francs per person.

Three clarifications, because they change how that figure reads. First, the suite at 91,492 francs is the most expensive room in the catalogue: it is not a mid-standing rate, it is the top of the grid, and the night is counted only once. Then, the catalogue also contains whole-villa privatisations for 15 to 20 people, from 300,000 to 325,000 Djiboutian francs: that is a group price, which we do not convert to a single person. Finally, the whale shark outing is possible only within the regulatory window fixed by decree, from 15 October to 15 March.

Which lines are missing from the three levels?

They are the same for all three, and we list them instead of estimating them.

Missing line Why it is not costed
Meals and drinks The catalogue publishes no catering price, and we have no citable survey
Taxis and urban travel Only the National Tourism Agency’s official grid exists: 600 Fdj the ride in town
Airport transfer Official grid: about 1,500 Fdj the ride, seven kilometres from Ambouli
Tips No costed practice in our sources
Travel and repatriation insurance Depends on the provider and the duration
Visa The rate depends on nationality and is displayed during entry on the e-Visa portal
International flight Air fares vary too much to be published without a dated source

Two other items exist but are neither catalogue prices nor official rates: the 4×4 with a driver, which the platform’s commercial display places around 44,000 Djiboutian francs per day, and the boat. Those amounts must be confirmed by quotation, and they completely change the economics of a stay for two or for four.

One last line, finally, is not an expense but a possible saving: group rates. The bungalow, the beach day, camping on full board and several tours are degressive. For four or six people, the same programme costs markedly less per person — without taking anything away from the content.

How do you move from one level to the next?

Three levers are enough, and they are costed.

The bed. Moving from the four-person bungalow (1,950 francs per person per night) to the deluxe double room shared two ways (12,500) multiplies that item by about six. It is by far the biggest gap between the levels.

The organisation. Contrary to what one expects, the organised tour is not much more expensive than the à la carte days: at backpacker level, the four parts taken separately cost 18,000 + 3,000 + 8,000 + 8,000 = 37,000 Djiboutian francs for four days, when a two-day tour is published at 35,000 for only two days. What you buy with a tour is the logistics, not a discount.

The rate retained for the tour. The same two-day tour, city and Lake Assal, is published at 15,130 Djiboutian francs in one version and 35,000 in another, for an identical announced programme. Taking the low rate rather than the high removes 19,870 francs from the mid-range level, which then becomes 73,630 francs. The second anomaly runs the other way: a three-day tour to Lake Abbe, Tadjoura and Lake Assal is published at 44,500 francs, when the two-day Lake Abbe and Lake Assal tour is 55,000 — the longer programme costs 10,500 francs less.

We cannot explain those two gaps: either the basis of calculation differs — group size, category of accommodation, number of meals — or one price is wrong. They have to be settled on the commercial side. Meanwhile, the only useful course of action is to ask for a written quotation detailing the nights, the meals and the vehicle, before comparing two offers on their displayed price.

Frequently asked questions

How much should you allow for a five-day stay in Djibouti?

Adding up only the published catalogue prices, our reconstruction gives 44,800 Djiboutian francs per person for a 5-day stay at backpacker level, bungalow shared four ways, 93,500 at mid-range level, and 236,492 at high-end level. Those three amounts are additions of visible terms, not rates. They exclude meals, drinks, taxis and the flight.

Can you travel in Djibouti on a small budget?

Yes, on one condition: share. The four-bed bungalow at the Sinny Hill Center, in Arta, is published at 7,800 Djiboutian francs a night for the whole bungalow, so 1,950 francs per person per night four ways. Taken alone, the same bungalow costs 31,200 francs for four nights, and the stay rises from 44,800 to 68,200 francs per person. Sharing weighs heavier than the choice of excursions.

Why do you publish no daily budget?

Because a daily average cannot be deduced from published prices. The catalogue prices neither meals, nor drinks, nor taxis, nor tips: an average would include them silently. We prefer to show the complete addition, term by term, and leave the missing line visible. You can then redo the calculation with your own food costs.

What is the price difference between an organised tour and individual excursions?

Smaller than one might think. At backpacker level, four parts taken separately — Lake Assal 18,000, Les Sables Blancs 3,000, Moucha and Maskali islands 8,000, Ras Korali from Arta 8,000 — cost 37,000 Djiboutian francs for four days. An organised two-day tour, covering only two of them, is published at 35,000. The saving of a small budget therefore comes from the night, not from the excursions.

Do the two price anomalies change the budget?

Yes, and that is why we publish them. The two-day tour Djibouti city and Lake Assal is published at 15,130 Djiboutian francs in one version and 35,000 in another, for the same announced programme. Taking the low rate rather than the high removes 19,870 francs from the mid-range level. Those gaps have to be settled by a written quotation, not by an assumption on our part.
