Budget in Djibouti: what does a trip cost on the spot?

Djibouti is an expensive destination for the region: everything is imported and the tourist supply is concentrated. The decisive items are the vehicle and the excursion. A 4×4 with driver is negotiated at around 44,000 Djiboutian francs a day, an organised excursion costs about 18,000 francs per person, and a night ranges from 7,800 francs in a bungalow to 91,500 francs in a suite, with a whole villa privatised from 300,000 francs for a group.

How to read this page. The catalogue fares quoted here (accommodation, excursions, camps) can be verified with the partner platform. Taxi, airport transfer and ferry fares come from the National Tourism Agency’s official grid (January 2021). The 4×4 with driver, for its part, is a commercial display, not a catalogue price. The budget profiles at the end of the page are an addition of those items, presented as a reconstruction: they are not observed totals. Meals and drinks are not quantified, for want of a reliable source.

What is the price of a trip to Djibouti?

The question has no single answer, and it has to be said plainly. A stay at a camp and a stay in an international hotel do not belong to the same budget: the accommodation catalogue runs from 7,800 to 325,000 Djiboutian francs a night. Everything therefore depends on three choices: where you sleep, how you travel, and how many excursions you do.

On the spot, two items dominate the bill. First the vehicle: outside Djibouti City, an ordinary car is not enough and the 4×4 with driver becomes essential. Then the excursion: transport, guide and sometimes boat are sold as a package, per person.

The international flight to Djibouti-Ambouli is bought separately and is not covered here: air fares vary too much to be published without a dated source.

Is the cost of living high in Djibouti?

Yes, markedly higher than in neighbouring countries, for a simple reason: the country imports almost everything it consumes, including part of its food and its water. The costs of energy, sea freight and telecommunications feed through into retail prices.

Three practical consequences for a traveller:

  • Accommodation is expensive. The hotel supply is narrow and concentrated on Djibouti City; international rates there are high.
  • Travel is expensive. Fuel and vehicles are imported, and hiring with a driver is paid as a daily package.
  • Tourist catering is expensive. The menus of establishments frequented by visitors are well above the local level.

On the other hand, urban taxi journeys remain affordable, and shared excursions bring the cost per person down sharply.

How much does travel on the spot cost?

Journey Price reference Unit What to know
Taxi ride in town from 600 Fdj per zone Agency grid. No meter: price to be negotiated before getting in
Ambouli airport ↔ city centre transfer about 1,500 Fdj per ride Agency grid. Seven kilometres, about ten minutes
4×4 with driver about 44,000 Fdj per vehicle and per day Neither an agency grid nor a catalogue price: commercial display, to be confirmed by quotation. Worthwhile from four passengers
Organised day trip about 18,000 Fdj per person Catalogue offer. Transport and guide included, meals excluded
Ferry Djibouti City ↔ Tadjourah 700 Fdj per adult, one way Agency grid. Child aged 2 to 12 and student: 350 Fdj
Ferry Djibouti City ↔ Obock 800 Fdj per adult, one way Agency grid. Child aged 2 to 12 and student: 400 Fdj

Two reservations about that table. The 4×4 rate is neither a catalogue price nor an official fare: the offer type “vehicle hire” does not exist in the partner platform’s catalogue, and the agency publishes no vehicle hire grid. The ~44,000 Fdj come from the commercial display on dalmar.app and must be confirmed by a written quotation — our page on the 4×4 with driver details this point. The taxi, airport transfer and ferry fares, for their part, really are a published official grid (agency, January 2021): they remain to be confirmed at the counter if the grid has moved since.

The calculation that matters. A 4×4 with driver at 44,000 Fdj a day looks out of reach for two. Shared between four, it comes to 11,000 Fdj per person, less than an organised excursion at 18,000 Fdj. The break-even point therefore sits around four people, and the private vehicle regains the advantage as soon as you string two sites together in the same day.

How much does accommodation in Djibouti cost?

The partner platform’s accommodation catalogue runs from 7,800 Fdj for a bungalow in an ecotourism centre at Arta up to 325,000 Fdj for the privatisation of a whole villa for a group of 15 to 20 people, with a median around 41,474 Fdj a night.

Be careful not to confuse the two extremes: the most expensive night per room is a suite at 91,492 Fdj. The 300,000 and 325,000 Fdj figures in the catalogue are not premium rates but whole-villa privatisations, sold for 15 to 20 people — a group price, which per person remains high but has nothing to do with a room.

Range Documented example Price per night
Budget Four-bed bungalow in an ecotourism centre (Arta) ≈ 7,800 Fdj
Camp Night in a beach camp, full board of the order of 15,000 to 17,000 Fdj
Mid-range Deluxe double room by the sea ≈ 25,000 Fdj
High end Suite in an international establishment ≈ 91,500 Fdj
Group Privatisation of a whole villa, 15 to 20 people from 300,000 to 325,000 Fdj

Those gaps explain why any national average for a daily budget is misleading. The same night in Djibouti can cost forty times more depending on the address — and the top of the catalogue belongs to group rental, not to an individual room.

What budget should you plan according to your profile?

The table below adds up documented items. It is not a budget observed on the ground, but a reconstruction, whose detail is visible column by column: you can redo the calculation and adapt it to your programme.

Profile Composition (documented items) Order of magnitude, per person per day
Backpacker Bungalow 7,800 + taxi ride 600 + organised excursion 18,000 26,400 Fdj
Comfort Double room 25,000 shared between two (12,500) + 4×4 shared between four (11,000) + excursion 18,000 41,500 Fdj
High end Suite 91,492 + private 4×4 44,000 + whale shark trip 25,000 160,492 Fdj

Three warnings about that table.

  1. Meals, drinks and tips are not included: we have no restaurant price record we can cite, and we prefer an empty cell to an invented figure.
  2. The international flight is not included.
  3. The “backpacker” line assumes an excursion every day, which is rare: without an excursion, it falls to 8,400 Fdj for the night and urban travel.

The catalogue’s absolute ceiling is not in that table: the privatisation of a whole villa (300,000 to 325,000 Fdj) is a group price for 15 to 20 people, which cannot be reduced to one person per day without distorting the comparison.

As a cross-check, cost-of-living comparison sites generally put a traveller’s daily budget in Djibouti at around 26,000 Fdj excluding flights. Our budget reconstruction falls in the same order of magnitude, which makes it plausible — without making it a measurement.

What is the price of a visa for Djibouti?

The visa fare depends on nationality and on the duration requested. It is displayed while the application is entered on the official e-Visa portal, and nowhere else in a binding way. Intermediaries offering “visa assistance” charge for that service on top of the government fare.

Plan for this item outside the budget on the spot: it is paid online before departure, or in cash in US dollars if you opt for the visa issued on arrival. Our page on visa and entry formalities details the procedure.

Which period is best for the budget?

The season drives prices as much as the weather. From November to January, the whale shark window coincides with the holidays: nights go first and fares rise. May and September are the least in-demand months: the same services are negotiated better, and the sites are almost empty.

Be careful, however: in summer, the heat of the interior forces you to leave early and to give up certain days. A seasonal saving can therefore be paid for in comfort. Our page on when to go to Djibouti gives the detail month by month.

How do you reduce the bill?

  • Travel as four. A 4×4 with driver divided by four completely changes the economics of the stay.
  • Choose the camp rather than the hotel for nights outside Djibouti City: that is where the catalogue’s lowest fares are found.
  • Use the ferry to Tadjourah or Obock rather than the road with a vehicle: 700 Fdj per adult to Tadjourah, 800 to Obock.
  • Combine excursions. Two sites in the same day with a private vehicle cost less than two organised excursions.
  • Pay in cash. Cards are little accepted, and the rate applied by some terminals is not in your favour.

Which fares does this page not publish?

In all honesty, here is what we could not document: the average price of a restaurant meal, the rate for a night in an unlisted hotel, the exact cost of the visa according to nationality, and the price of flights from a given point of departure. That data exists, but no source we can cite publishes it in a dated way. We prefer to refer you to the national tourism agency and to the official statistics rather than advance an unverifiable figure.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of a trip to Djibouti?

There is no reliable average price: between the cheapest bungalow in the catalogue and the privatisation of a whole villa for a group, the gap runs from one to more than forty. Adding up the published fares — night, travel, excursion — gives an order of 26,400 Djiboutian francs per person per day on a budget formula, and far more on a private one. The international flight comes on top of that budget.

Is the cost of living high in Djibouti?

Yes, for the region. The country imports almost everything it consumes, energy and telecoms are expensive, and the tourist accommodation supply is narrow. Cost-of-living comparison sites regularly rank Djibouti among the most expensive capitals in East Africa. Accommodation and vehicles weigh most heavily in the bill for a stay.

How much is a day trip from Djibouti City?

Allow about 18,000 Djiboutian francs per person for an organised day trip, transport and guide included: that is the fare displayed for Lake Assal. The whale shark trip, longer and dependent on a boat, sits at around 25,000 francs per person in high season. Meals are generally not included in those fares.

How much do a taxi and the airport transfer cost?

In town, a ride starts at about 600 Djiboutian francs per zone. The transfer from Ambouli international airport, seven kilometres from the centre, comes to about 1,500 Djiboutian francs. No meter is used: fix the price before getting in. Bring cash, as not all drivers accept cards.

Can you travel in Djibouti on a small budget?

With difficulty, but it is possible if you give up the private vehicle. The ferry to Tadjourah or Obock costs 700 francs per adult to Tadjourah and 800 to Obock, the cheapest bungalows in the catalogue are at 7,800 francs, and shared excursions bring down the transport cost per person. Book out of season and travel as a group to split the fixed items.
