Moucha or Maskali: two islands, one trip?

Moucha and Maskali do not compete: they are two islands of one trip, forty-five minutes by boat from Djibouti City, and the catalogue offer sells them together at 8,000 Djiboutian francs for the day. The trade-off concerns the formula, not the island: a shared excursion at 8,000 francs, a privatised package at 40,000 francs for one to ten passengers, or another destination such as the Seven Brothers, which is a more technical dive.
Moucha and Maskali: one trip or two?
One. The two islands occupy the entrance to the Gulf of Tadjourah, about forty-five minutes by boat from Djibouti City, and the offer sold in the catalogue carries both names in its title. Maskali is reached in the same movement as Moucha, on the same day, with the same boat.
In other words, the question “Moucha or Maskali?” does not correspond to a real trade-off. It corresponds to a frequent search, and that is the reason for this page: to answer it honestly rather than manufacture an opposition. You will not choose between two islands, you will choose a formula and, possibly, another destination.
That is also why this page is shorter than the other comparisons in the same folder. We would rather say so than pad it out: when a comparison has only one side, artificially lengthening it amounts to misleading the reader about the nature of the decision.
How much does the day at the two islands cost?
| Catalogue offer | Announced price | Basis | Price per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-day excursion, Moucha and Maskali | 8,000 Fdj | not specified in the record | — |
| Privatised package for the two islands | 40,000 Fdj | 1 to 10 passengers | 40,000 Fdj alone, 4,000 Fdj for ten |
| Ile Musha package with transfers | 51,602 Fdj | 1 person | 51,602 Fdj |
| Ile Musha package with transfers | 26,691 Fdj | 2 people | 13,346 Fdj |
Two remarks on how to read that table. First, the gap between the day offer and the individual package reaches more than six times the amount. Second, the most expensive formula is not the most comfortable: it is individual. A package sold for one to ten passengers costs no more for ten than for one, which divides its price per head by ten.
Why does the price per person vary so much?
Because the dominant item is the boat, and a boat does not divide. Three logics coexist in the offer.
The day formula. The full excursion is announced at 8,000 Djiboutian francs. It is the simplest formula: you join a group, the crossing and the day on the spot are organised. Our record does not specify whether that amount is per person, and that is the only ambiguity in this table: we retain the per-person reading below, because it is the one that allows comparison. If your quotation announces a flat rate, redo the calculation.
Privatisation. The 40,000 franc package is sold for one to ten passengers. The amount does not change with the number of participants: for two, you pay 20,000 francs per person; for ten, 4,000. It is the most advantageous formula as soon as the group is assembled, and the most expensive if you travel alone.
The package with transfers. The formula sold at 51,602 francs for one person and 26,691 francs for two includes transfers. It is announced for one or two passengers, which destines it to a couple or a solo traveller rather than a group.
The detail of access, sites and season appears on the page for the Moucha and Maskali islands: that page is the reference for what you see on the spot, and we do not duplicate it here.
What does the choice of island change, once you are there?
| Criterion | Moucha | Maskali |
|---|---|---|
| Occupation | Beach and catering facilities | Almost uninhabited |
| What you come to see | Fine sand beaches, reefs, seabirds | Mangrove of white mangroves, fish-rich shallows |
| Swimming and snorkelling | Accessible from the shore | Accessible, shallow water in places |
| Interest for a diver | Renowned neighbouring sites, including the Canyon and the Dome | Fish-rich shallows, turtles, ribbon-tailed stingray |
| Formula suited to it | A full day with catering on the spot | A slow boat crossing or fins |
| If you only have half a day | This is where you stay | To be ruled out |
The difference is therefore real, but it does not play out at the level of choosing an itinerary: it plays out in what you do with the day. Moucha is the logistics base, Maskali the nature trip. The combined day gives you both.
Should you go further, to the Seven Brothers?
Putting the question that way is more useful than opposing the two islands, because it is the real trade-off for a day at sea in Djibouti.
| Criterion | Moucha and Maskali | Seven Brothers archipelago |
|---|---|---|
| Position | Entrance to the Gulf of Tadjourah | North of the Obock region |
| Access | Boat, about 45 minutes | Boat, with no regular link |
| Public | Everyone, swimming and snorkelling | Divers, with some sites reserved for the experienced |
| Nature of the trip | A day of beach and reef | Diving on volcanic islets |
| Supervision | Common organised formulas | Few structures on the spot |
| Price published in the catalogue | from 8,000 to 51,602 Fdj depending on the formula | no trip price published in our record |
It is the “public” line of the table that decides. The Seven Brothers are not a more ambitious version of Moucha: it is a technical diving destination in a protected archipelago, where the “underwater arch” of Ile Basse (Tolka) is described in full current and reserved for experienced divers. To place the country’s whole underwater offer, see diving in Djibouti.
We put no figure on that option. The catalogue we recorded publishes destination pages for the archipelago, but no trip price: putting forward an amount would be an invention. Ask an operator for a quotation, and check at the same time that they really do organise the crossing from Obock.
Which formula should you choose, and when should you book?
| Your situation | The formula that holds | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solo traveller, controlled budget | Day excursion, 8,000 Fdj | The lowest amount announced for the two islands, with no group commitment |
| A group of six to ten | Privatised package, 40,000 Fdj | The price per head falls to 4,000 to 6,667 Fdj |
| A couple or a pair | Ile Musha package for two, 26,691 Fdj | Transfers included, 13,346 Fdj per person |
| A group of two to four | Day excursion | Privatisation costs more than it returns |
| A certified diver | The Seven Brothers or the gulf sites | It is no longer the same day, nor the same supervision |
| Half a day only | Moucha only | Maskali is added to a full day |
One last point, which holds for every formula: the state of the sea decides. A trip can be postponed because of wind or swell, and there is no guaranteed catch-up the next day. Keep a margin in your programme if you are connecting with a flight, and before booking check what is included — transfer, lunch, drinks, snorkelling gear and sun loungers are not systematically included. The most favourable season runs from October to April, as when to go to Djibouti recalls. If you prefer to frame the nautical logistics yourself, boat hire is the building block to prepare in advance.
Frequently asked questions
Can you visit Moucha and Maskali in the same day?
Yes, and it is in fact the standard formula. The two islands are neighbours, at the entrance to the Gulf of Tadjourah, and the offer sold in the catalogue carries both names in its title. Allow about forty-five minutes by boat from Djibouti City to reach Moucha, and Maskali is reached in the same movement. The full day is announced at 8,000 Djiboutian francs.
Do you really have to choose between Moucha and Maskali?
No. The question rarely arises as such, because the trip combines both islands in the same boat day. The choice comes down to the margins: Moucha has beach and catering facilities, Maskali is almost uninhabited with a preserved mangrove. If you only have half a day, stay on Moucha.
How much does a day at the Moucha and Maskali islands cost?
The full-day excursion is announced at 8,000 Djiboutian francs. The privatised package for one to ten passengers costs 40,000 francs, that is 4,000 francs per person if you are ten and the whole amount if you are alone. A separate package, including transfers, is offered at 51,602 francs for one person and 26,691 francs for two.
Moucha or the Seven Brothers: how do you decide?
They are not two versions of the same day. Moucha and Maskali are visited by boat for the day, with swimming and snorkelling accessible to everyone. The Seven Brothers archipelago, north of Obock, is a diving area where some sites are reserved for experienced divers, with no regular link. We put no figure on that option: the catalogue publishes no trip price.
Can you stay overnight on Moucha or Maskali?
Maskali is almost uninhabited, so accommodation there is very limited. Moucha has beach facilities, which allows a full day there without heavy logistics. For a night on the spot, it is better to go through an operator who arranges the transfer and the stay than to improvise on the shore. Check what is included before booking.
